Our vision is of sustainable ocean ecosystems that support thriving populations of manta rays and other marine biodiversity, and underpin the welfare of coastal communities. Small-scale fisheries provide important livelihoods and food security for coastal communities. Yet at the same time, many of these fisheries are unregulated and unreported, and use gears that have wide-ranging environmental impacts. Indonesia's Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries estimates that 70% of all sharks and rays landed are bycatch.
Through our sustainable fisheries program, we are working to assist small-scale fishers to fish smarter and more responsibly, and to maximise their earnings while minimising unsustainable impacts on manta rays and other non-target species.
